The Ogun State Police Command has apprehended a truck driver, Olalere Timileyin, and his motor boy in Obada Oko, Abeokuta, following the death of a man reportedly assaulted for allegedly stealing a tarpaulin.
The arrest, confirmed in a statement by the state’s police spokesperson, SP Omolola Odutola, occurred after a concerned resident, Alao Fadipe, alerted authorities to a violent altercation in front of his house around 3 a.m. on Friday, December 13.
Fadipe reported witnessing Timileyin and his motor boy, both linked to a cement factory in Itori, Ewekoro Local Government Area, allegedly assaulting the unidentified man.
According to the police, the victim fell unconscious during the incident.
“Acting on the report, detectives from Obada Oko swiftly responded and detained the suspects at the scene,” Odutola stated.
The injured man was rushed to the State Hospital in Ijaye for treatment but succumbed to his injuries. His body has since been deposited at the morgue for an autopsy, Odutola added.
The suspects are currently in police custody for questioning while efforts are ongoing to identify and contact the victim’s family.
“This case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Eleweran, for further investigation,” Odutola revealed.
The Ogun State Police Command also issued a warning to residents against engaging in violent acts or street fights, urging everyone to maintain peace during the festive season and beyond.
