Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has pledged to ensure a secure and violence-free festive season, with a particular focus on eradicating cult-related violence in the state.
In a statement released on Saturday by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, the governor assured residents that security agencies are on high alert to protect lives and property during the Yuletide.
“Governor Monday Okpebholo is committed to creating a safe environment where citizens can carry out their daily activities without fear. Security personnel have been deployed to key areas across the state to ensure no lives are lost during this festive season,” the statement read.
Since assuming office on November 12, 2024, Governor Okpebholo has made tackling the state’s security challenges, including cult violence in Benin City, a top priority.
During his inaugural address, he vowed to take a strong stand against kidnapping and violent crimes, including cultism, which have negatively impacted the state’s image and disrupted economic activities.
“In his maiden security council meeting, the governor emphasized his zero-tolerance approach to cult-related killings and directed law enforcement to take decisive action,” Itua added.
Security operatives have since intensified patrols in strategic locations, with reports indicating a significant drop in cult violence in Benin City. The governor has directed them to maintain pressure on criminal elements, ensuring peace across the state.
“Governor Okpebholo has charged security agencies to identify and root out criminals wherever they may be hiding, making it clear that Edo State must remain safe for all its citizens,” Itua said.
Security chiefs in the state have pledged their full support for the governor’s directives, launching immediate measures to clamp down on cultists and other criminal groups.
A security official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, warned those planning to disrupt the peace. “Anyone involved in cultism or criminal activities will face mass arrests and swift prosecution. The governor’s administration will not compromise the safety of Edo residents,” the official stated.
Governor Okpebholo’s administration is determined to ensure a safe and joyous festive period for all citizens, reinforcing its commitment to security and economic stability.
