Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, on Tuesday, announced that over 11,000 out-of-school children in the Federal Capital Territory will be enrolled in schools by September 2024.
According to The PUNCH, this initiative follows a commitment from the National Commission for Almajiri and Out-of-School Children Education, in collaboration with Commissioners of Education from several northern states, to identify and enroll at least 10,000 out-of-school children in the FCT before September.
During a visit to the FCT Smart School in Karshi, accompanied by Minister of State for Education Tanko Sununu, Mamman reaffirmed the government’s dedication to addressing the issue of out-of-school children.
“Over 11,000 Almajiris were identified by the National Commission for Almajiri and Out-of-School Children Education in the Federal Capital Territory alone, and they will be enrolled in different schools across the country by September,” he stated.
Mamman also highlighted the government’s plan to establish one smart school in each state across Nigeria.
Currently, 26 smart schools are operational, with construction on the remaining ones underway.
“This is part of the legacy this government is delivering to Nigerians, which is to make provision for a digitalised school system for pupils to be trained in the use of technology right from kindergarten to basic and junior secondary school,” he explained.
The minister emphasized that these smart schools will not only focus on traditional teaching but also involve teachers in the development of the curriculum, ensuring that students are well-equipped for the digital age.
