At least 12 people lost their lives in a devastating road accident on the Baimari–Geidam Road in Yobe State.
The incident, which occurred near Chelluri village around 10:00 pm on Tuesday, was confirmed by Livinus Yilzoom, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Yobe, in a statement issued on Wednesday.
According to The PUNCH, Yilzoom said the crash happened when a Howo truck collided with a bus, identified by registration number BAU 124 YF. The impact caused the bus to burst into flames, resulting in the tragic deaths of all 12 passengers onboard.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the Howo truck’s obstruction of the road was the immediate cause of the crash,” Yilzoom explained. “Excessive speed and overloading by the bus driver were contributing factors.”
The Sector Commander urged motorists to exercise caution, particularly during night journeys in the harmattan season.
“Poor visibility during harmattan is a significant cause of road accidents. We advise drivers to avoid night travel and adhere to traffic regulations to prevent such tragedies,” he stated.
