Olympic gold medalist, Dosu Joseph, has called on Nigerians to continue supporting the Super Falcons, insisting that the team still has a chance to advance to the knockout stages of the Paris 2024 Olympic Women’s Football tournament despite their 1-0 loss to Spain.
The former Nigerian international urged fans to stay hopeful about the Super Falcons’ prospects, even after the narrow defeat that placed them at the bottom of Group C.
“It’s been tough for the Super Falcons after playing Brazil and Spain. The team narrowly lost to both teams, but I am still confident that it’s not yet over for them,” Dosu told Complete Sports.
Dosu stressed the mathematical possibility of advancement, saying, “There is still an outside chance for the team to qualify if they get a positive result against Japan, who are currently on three points. It will be wrong to write off the team.”
His comments are a motivational boost for both the Super Falcons and their supporters.
With one group stage match remaining against Japan, Nigeria must secure a positive result to keep their Olympic aspirations alive.
In their match against Spain, the Super Falcons delivered a strong defensive performance, thwarting the reigning world champions for most of the game.
However, Alexia Putellas’ stunning free-kick in the 84th minute dashed Nigeria’s hopes.
Despite a late push, including a near-equalizer by substitute Chinwedu Ihezuo, Nigeria’s efforts fell short, leaving them to lament missed chances.
