Three people have been killed as young men believed to be cultists took over Sagamu, the administrative center of Sagamu Local Government Area, in Ogun State.
The Punch reported that the thugs, who were purported members of the confraternities of Eiye and Aiye, resumed their struggle for domination.
The incident began on Tuesday and continued through Friday as locals fled for safety.
According to information obtained by our correspondent, the ongoing fight that resulted in the deaths of three people has paralyzed economic activity in various areas of Sagamu as of Saturday.
Further information revealed that numerous more people were hurt during the attack, causing locals to stay inside.
One of the victims, a worker at the Awabat filling station in Ijokun, was shot and killed on Friday night, according to a local who asked to remain anonymous.
The dead, known as Matey, was reportedly shot in the head by thugs, the resident claimed.
The event was confirmed by the public relations officer for the Ogun State Police, SP Abimbola Oyeyemi.
However, he revealed that the police had detained a significant number of the cultists.
“Yes, cultists killed three people in Sagamu. But we’ve taken several of them into custody.
“We have begun pursuing those responsible, and several of them are in detention. More will still be detained since we are tracking them down,” according to Oyeyemi.
In order to combat cultism and other associated crimes, particularly in Sagamu and other areas of the state, the governor announced the formation of a Joint Intervention Squad made up of personnel from the military, police, Department of State Security, Civil Defence, and neighborhood watch groups.
