An auto accident has reportedly killed six persons along the 9th Mile-Ugwu Onyeama road,Enugu State.
The accident involving a petroleum tanker, a Jeep, a GUO Hiace bus, and a truck carrying a heavy cargo resulted in a large number of fatalities.
Some of the survivors were reportedly treated at Our Saviour Medical Centre, 9th Mile, Enugu, the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Enugu, and the Enugu State University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Parklane.
Enugu State Deputy Governor Ifeanyi Ossai stated that the accident’s proximate cause had not yet been determined, as the government was awaiting a report from the responsible institutions detailing what transpired.
“Unfortunately, we lost some lives while a couple of our citizens were injured. We have visited the scene of the accident and various hospitals where the survivors were hospitalised, and we are grateful to the doctors for their prompt interventions. We are also grateful to the security agencies that came for immediate rescue,” he said.
Ossai stated that the state government would support the treatment and rehabilitation of the injured.
The medical director of Our Saviour Medical Centre, Dr. Emma Ngwu characterised the accident as “horrendous with numerous fatalities.”
According to him, fourteen survivors were transported to the hospital, while six dead corpses were placed in the mortuary.
“We have been busy all this time, trying to make sure those of them who are alive get treated, and 10 of them are seriously injured,” he said.
A survivor who identified himself as Blessing stated that the GUO bus carrying passengers left Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, for Lagos before the accident.
