The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has stated that the alarming case of insecurity has made several parents afraid of sending their children to schools.
According to Daily Trust, he stated this on Thursday at the launch of “Exercise Safe Schools” held in Makurdi, the Benue State capital.
He said, “Parents are afraid of sending their children to school for fear of attacks.”
The minister, speaking through the Commandant General of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Ahmed Abubakar Audi, argued that the issue of attacks on schools in Nigeria has been a cause for concern since 2014, when a significant number of girls were kidnapped from a secondary school in Chibok, Borno State.
On the other hand, Audi praised the establishment of the safer schools section in the NSCDC in a speech delivered at the graduation of 364 trainees who would now be responsible for ensuring the safety of schools in Benue and the rest of the country, including all of the North Central states.
Since its inception in various regions of the federation, he said, the project has helped avoid over 30 school attacks across the country.
