The National Youth Service Corps has announced the rescue of another female corps member who was kidnapped by bandits in Zamfara state.
The NYSC Spokesperson, Eddy Megwa, confirmed this in a press statement on Saturday.
Megwa said the corps member was freed on Friday night “through the help of security agencies”. He added that the NYSC was hopeful that the remaining four captives would soon regain their freedom.
The statement quoted the NYSC Management as saying: “Management of the National Youth Service Corps wishes to convey to the general public that the Scheme, through the help of security agencies on Friday, 20th October, 2023 at about 12.30 pm secured the release of one of the female Prospective Corps Members abducted in Zamfara, out of the seven in captivity and the bus driver.
The Scheme is confident that with the combined efforts of security agencies, the remaining will be released”.
PUNCH Metro had reported that eight prospective corps members were travelling in an Akwa Ibom Transport Company bus from Uyo to Sokoto for their orientation camp when they were intercepted by gunmen on August 19. Three of them were later released on September 18, while one escaped on October 10.
The four remaining corps members have been in captivity for over two months, as the bandits reportedly demanded N4 million as ransom.
The NYSC assured that it would not relent in its duty to safeguard the welfare and security of its staff and corps members. It also urged them to be vigilant and cautious of their personal safety.
