The Gombe State chapter of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria has closed down operations at the state House of Assembly in accordance with the nationwide strike organized by the association.
According to The PUNCH, it was reported that hundreds of PASAN members took to the streets with placards displaying various slogans advocating for Assembly autonomy, emphasizing that it is a right, not a privilege. They also chanted solidarity songs.
Addressing journalists at the main gate of the state assembly, the state chairman of the association, Mohammed Dukku, said “The measure is the only option considering the fact that the Federal Government failed to obey section 121 (3a) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which pave the way for the legislative autonomy.”
As stated by Dukku, the state assembly will be closed indefinitely, and all assembly staff will be required to stay at home.
Furthermore, the state secretary of PASAN, Aminu Aliyu, emphasized that this closure aligns with the national body’s instructions due to the Federal Government’s failure to implement the financial autonomy granted to the houses of assembly.
“This autonomy was granted by former President Muhammadu Buhari nationwide. Despite several meetings, it has not been implemented,” he added.
