The Nigeria Football Federation board on Monday approved the recommendation of its Technical Development Committee to appoint Finidi George as the new head coach of the Super Eagles.
George, a former winger, previously served as assistant to Jose Peseiro for 20 months before Peseiro left the post. During his time as assistant, the team finished second at the AFCON 2023 in Côte d’Ivoire.
After Peseiro’s departure, George was appointed interim coach for two friendly games against Ghana and Mali in Marrakech, Morocco. The Eagles won 2-1 against Ghana but lost 2-0 to Mali.
The 52-year-old’s immediate task will be the Group C 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic in June. Currently, the Eagles are in third place with two points after two games.
