Super Eagles midfielder, Kelechi Nwakali, is in hot water with Portuguese SuperLiga team Chaves.
The club is considering serious sanctions against him for using his phone while sitting on the substitutes’ bench during a recent match against Famalicao.
Nwakali had started the game but was substituted at halftime, which ended in a 1-0 defeat for Chaves, sealing their relegation from the top-flight league.
Gustavo Sa’s goal for Famalicao in first-half stoppage time proved decisive.
Chaves, now languishing at the bottom of the league table with 23 points from 33 games, is reportedly displeased with Nwakali’s behavior and is expected to take action against him.
This incident adds to Nwakali’s history of disciplinary issues, as
The Nigerian international has faced disciplinary issues with clubs in the past as he previously lost his contract at Spanish club Ponferradina for returning late from the 2021 Africa Cup of Nation in Cameroon.
In 2022, he was released by Spanish side SD Huesca.
Nwakali claimed his dismissal was due to his decision to play at the Africa Cup of Nations against the club’s wishes, stating that the Sporting Director warned him he would not play again if he participated in the tournament.
He had only made 33 appearances for Huesca before his contract was terminated.
Before this, he had made 33 appearances for Chaves. Nwakali, once seen as a promising talent, had joined English Premier League side Arsenal in 2016 but struggled to secure a spot in the first team.
He mentioned leaving Arsenal due to work permit issues and chose to move to Spain.
