The body of Professor Olorunfemi Olaofe, the former Deputy Vice Chancellor of Ekiti State University in Ado Ekiti, has been discovered in a shallow grave.
According to The PUNCH, the 79-year-old retired academic was kidnapped on July 9 from his residence along with his security guard, and his body was found in a remote area.
The cause of Olaofe’s death remains undetermined, with speculation about whether it was due to natural causes or foul play by his abductors.
The police recovered his vehicle shortly after the kidnapping, and the kidnappers, who initially demanded a ransom of N50 million, ceased communication after making their demand.
Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, Adeniran Akinwale, confirmed the discovery of Olaofe’s body and indicated that several arrests have been made. “We suspect insider involvement, as it appears the professor’s security guard was complicit in the kidnapping,” Akinwale stated.
He added that further details would be disclosed at a later time.
During the search for Olaofe, various groups, including the Are Ekiti Progressives Union, the Ekiti Council of Elders, and the Nigerian Universities Pensioners’ Association (EKSU Branch), had urged security agencies and the state government to intensify their efforts to rescue him alive.
