Manchester City secured the Community Shield with a dramatic victory over Manchester United in a penalty shoot-out.
The match saw late drama, with Alejandro Garnacho putting United ahead in normal time before Bernardo Silva equalized for City.
United’s strategy was cautious from the start. They often played safe passes back to goalkeeper Andre Onana, rarely advancing into City’s half.
This allowed Pep Guardiola’s side to control the game and create numerous opportunities.
Rico Lewis was a standout for City, weaving through United’s defense and providing key chances.
Around the 20-minute mark, he delivered a cross into the box. Both Onana and Erling Haaland lunged for it, but the ball was cleared by United’s defense.
A few moments later, Oscar Bobb’s shot soared into the stands.
United’s first real attempt came from Amad Diallo, whose low shot narrowly missed the target.
Jeremy Doku also tried to replicate his FA Cup final success but was unsuccessful, leaving the score at 0-0 as the teams went into the break.
In the second half, Bruno Fernandes thought he had scored when he curled a beautiful shot into the net, only for the goal to be disallowed due to an offside flag.
United’s attacking struggles continued until the 60th minute when Erik ten Hag shifted tactics to a back three.
Despite a missed opportunity by Marcus Rashford, who hit the post, United finally took the lead through Garnacho.
City responded quickly, with Silva leveling the score before the final whistle. The game proceeded to a penalty shoot-out where Jonny Evans missed his spot-kick, allowing Manuel Akanji to secure the Community Shield for City.
With this victory, City begins their 2024/25 campaign with silverware in hand, aiming for a fifth consecutive Premier League title.
