Augustine Eguavoen has stepped down from his role as the interim coach of the Super Eagles, concluding a brief but impactful stint in charge of the Nigerian national team.
His decision marks the end of a mission that was clear from the start—temporary yet effective.
Eguavoen acknowledged that his task was limited to two matches, and he fulfilled his responsibilities accordingly.
He stated, “My mandate was for two games and it ends today (against Rwanda). I appreciate my players and the NFF leadership.”
Eguavoen, who also serves as the Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation was called upon to lead the Super Eagles on an interim basis following the NFF’s unsuccessful search for a permanent head coach.
His appointment came at a time when stability and direction were desperately needed for the team.
During his time at the helm, Eguavoen was tasked with overseeing two crucial 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, guiding the Super Eagles against the Benin Republic and Rwanda.
True to his reputation, he handled this assignment with precision, leveraging his vast experience and passion for Nigerian football to navigate these challenging fixtures successfully.
The conclusion of his interim tenure is in line with the agreement he had made before accepting the role.
Despite the brevity of his time in charge, Eguavoen’s leadership brought a sense of calm and purpose to the squad, laying a foundation that could benefit the team moving forward.
With Eguavoen stepping aside, the NFF will now renew its search for a permanent head coach, one who can build upon the stability Eguavoen established and take the Super Eagles to greater height.
The new coach will need the vision, expertise, and tactical acumen to steer the team through the remainder of the AFCON qualifiers and beyond, ensuring that Nigeria remains competitive on the international stage.
