Abia State Governor Alex Otti has announced that civil servants implicated in a series of pension fraud cases have been arrested and will soon face legal action.
Speaking from the Government House in Umuahia during his monthly media briefing, Otti emphasized that some of those involved in the alleged fraud are living abroad, and his administration is making arrangements for their repatriation to Nigeria to answer for their actions.
In his remarks on Thursday evening, Otti underscored his administration’s zero tolerance for corruption and stressed that he had ordered the prompt arraignment of the suspects in court.
He criticized those defending one of the detained suspects, expressing frustration at anyone trying to justify the theft of public funds.
Otti said, “My question is somebody stole and I arrested him and you went to the press to say I shouldn’t arrest a thief; that means you are a thief.” He disclosed that between 10 and 11 individuals are currently under investigation, with efforts underway to repatriate those who are currently overseas to ensure accountability.
The governor also addressed recent concerns about the relocation of Abia State University’s Umuahia campus back to its main location in Uturu.
Despite protests from some students, Otti confirmed that the decision will not be reversed, emphasizing that the move was made in the students’ best interest.
He assured the public that Uturu would soon be equipped with adequate accommodation, water supply, and updated facilities to create a conducive learning environment.
Otti also spoke on the issue of prolonged power outages in Ohafia, noting that the newly established Greater Ohafia Development Authority aims to foster development in the region and respond to the residents’ needs.
Additionally, he revealed that he had instructed the State’s Commissioner for Finance and the Accountant General to promptly resolve any salary discrepancies reported by some civil servants.
With these initiatives, the Governor reiterated his commitment to improving governance, enforcing accountability, and addressing essential infrastructure needs across Abia State.
