Mariya Lagbaja, wife of the late Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, has expressed enduring love for her husband, reflecting on their nearly 17-year marriage.
In a moving tribute included in the burial programme, Mariya described their relationship as one built on friendship, mutual respect, and unwavering support. She reminisced about the bond they shared, which she said was filled with joy and love.
“Meeting you over 17 years ago changed my life forever,” she wrote. “Our friendship and bond were meant to last a lifetime. Though our time together was tragically cut short, I will forever treasure the moments we shared.”
Mariya recounted their journey, beginning with their wedding on December 29, 2007. She described Lt. Gen. Lagbaja as a loving and devoted husband who brought extraordinary happiness into her life.
“On the day we chose each other, I never imagined this journey would end so soon. You carried me through life’s challenges and were my strength and source of joy. Your love and devotion were unparalleled,” she added.
In her tribute, Mariya pledged to hold on to their cherished memories and the lessons he instilled in their family.
“You brought beauty and joy to my life. Your love and support were my rock and guiding force. I will forever hold our memories dear and cherish them throughout my lifetime,” she wrote.
Mariya also highlighted her late husband’s role as the spiritual leader of their home, emphasizing how his faith and devotion to God inspired the family.
“You taught us to love Jesus and serve Him wholeheartedly. You always sang and danced joyfully in God’s presence, giving me the assurance that you are now in a better place, doing the same with the host of heaven,” she said.
Despite the demands of his military career, Mariya described Lt. Gen. Lagbaja as a dedicated father who always made time for their children, Emmanuel and Dara.
“Although his work often kept him away, he never failed to create moments with the children, helping with schoolwork, solving problems, or simply playing with them. His legacy lives on in our children, who promise to make him proud,” she noted.
Reflecting on her husband’s final days, Mariya expressed admiration for his courage and resilience. She said his absence would leave an indelible void but assured him of her eternal love.
“On November 5, as I looked at you for the last time, I knew you had fought a good fight to the end. Though you are gone, you will forever remain in our hearts. Rest well, my leader, my friend, and my hero. Until we meet again, sleep on, God’s General,” she concluded.
