Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has expressed condolences to the Catholic community in the state over the passing of Monsignor Thomas Oleghe, Nigeria’s oldest Catholic priest, who died on Sunday at the age of 104.
In a statement issued on Monday by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, the governor praised Monsignor Oleghe’s exemplary life of humility, service, and selfless contributions, describing it as a valuable lesson for all Nigerians.
He extended heartfelt sympathies to Oleghe’s family, the Catholic faithful across Nigeria, and especially the Auchi Diocese.
“Fr. Oleghe, from Igiode town in Agenebode, Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State, lived a remarkable and fulfilled life. Despite his ripe age, his absence will be deeply felt due to the numerous lives he impacted and the fatherly roles he played,” Okpebholo stated.
On behalf of the Edo State government and people, the governor prayed for strength for the bereaved and eternal rest for the late priest.
The Bishop of Auchi, Gabriel Dunia, confirmed Oleghe’s death in a statement on Sunday. According to the bishop, Monsignor Oleghe passed away peacefully at about 2:30 am on November 24, 2024.
He revealed that funeral arrangements have been scheduled for Wednesday, November 27, 2024.
“With gratitude to God for a life well-lived, I inform you of the passing of the Rt. Rev. Monsignor Thomas Oleghe. He was the oldest Catholic priest in Nigeria and died at 104. May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace,” Bishop Dunia stated.
Monsignor Oleghe’s contributions to the Catholic faith, particularly in Edo State, were widely acknowledged. His burial is expected to draw dignitaries, clergy, and faithful from across the country to honor his legacy.
