The Sokoto State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress has announced the suspension of its proposed industrial action following an agreement with the state government on the implementation of a new minimum wage of N70,000.
According to the Nation, the state NLC Chairman, Comrade Abdullahi Aliyu Jungle, disclosed that the wage increment, scheduled to take effect in January 2025, will benefit local government workers and teachers across the state.
After a meeting held with the union’s executives at the NLC Secretariat in Sokoto, Jungle expressed the branch’s support for the agreement and assured workers of the union’s commitment to monitoring the process.
“The Sokoto NLC fully backs the implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage announced by the state government. We will also collaborate with the government to ensure a seamless process, including conducting screening and verification to confirm that only genuinely employed workers benefit from this adjustment,” he stated.
The Chairman emphasized that the wage increment aligns with the union’s mission to enhance workers’ welfare and contribute to the state’s development goals. He called on workers to remain patient and optimistic about future benefits.
“We believe this is just the beginning. More welfare packages are on the way for workers in Sokoto State,” Jungle said confidently.
The development follows Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto’s recent announcement during the presentation of the proposed 2025 budget to the state House of Assembly.
The governor had confirmed that the N70,000 minimum wage would come into effect in January 2025 as part of efforts to improve the living standards of civil servants.
The NLC urged workers to cooperate with the verification process and assured them that the union would continue to advocate for their interests in collaboration with the government.
