The Nigeria Police Force has distanced itself from a viral video showing uniformed personnel scooping fuel from a fallen tanker.
The video, which has been widely circulated on social media, purportedly portrays officers engaging in unprofessional conduct.
However, the Force has clarified that the individuals in the video are not members of the Nigeria Police Force. Instead, they are reportedly uniformed personnel from a neighboring francophone country.
The camouflage uniforms seen in the footage, which bear some resemblance to those of the Nigerian Police, may have led to the confusion. Notably, the individuals in the video were speaking French, further dispelling claims of their Nigerian origin.
In a statement released on Monday, December 2, 2024, by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the NPF condemned the dissemination of the video, describing it as an attempt to tarnish its reputation.
“We strongly condemn the spread of such disinformation and unverified content aimed at discrediting the Nigeria Police Force,” Adejobi said. “These actions not only undermine the integrity of the Force but also have far-reaching negative consequences for our nation and its citizens.”
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Police under the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police to maintaining professionalism and ensuring the safety of Nigerians.
“The Nigeria Police Force remains dedicated to discipline, professionalism, and safeguarding the security of all Nigerians. Acts that compromise the Force’s reputation are unacceptable and will not be tolerated,” he added.
Adejobi also urged Nigerians to verify information before sharing it to avoid spreading falsehoods. “We appeal to the public to exercise caution and confirm the authenticity of information before sharing it. This will help foster national unity and uphold the credibility of institutions working tirelessly for public safety,” he concluded.
