Napoli missed the chance to reclaim the top spot in Serie A after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Lazio at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.
It marked the second time in four days that the Biancoceleste got the better of the Partenopei, following their 3-1 victory in the Coppa Italia last-16 at the Stadio Olimpico on Thursday.
Marco Baroni’s men emerged victorious once more thanks to a spectacular late strike from Gustav Isaksen, who sealed the win with 11 minutes left on the clock.
The result lifted Lazio level on points with Inter, who sit in third place.
The first half saw Scott McTominay and Isaksen come close to breaking the deadlock, while Khvicha Kvaratskhelia narrowly missed the target shortly before halftime.
In the second half, both teams struck the woodwork, with Fisayo Dele-Bashiru rattling the crossbar from distance and Frank Anguissa seeing his header hit the post.
The breakthrough came in the 79th minute when Tijjani Noslin, who netted a hat-trick in Thursday’s triumph, set up Isaksen. The forward capped off a swift counter-attack by curling a stunning 20-yard shot past Alex Meret.
The win marked a historic moment for Lazio, as they secured their third consecutive Serie A victory at Napoli for the first time.
Known for their knack for late drama, they now lead the league in goals scored after the 75th minute, with 12 to their name.
Additionally, their sixth single-goal victory this season is more than any other team in the division.
Isaksen’s match-winning effort took his tally for the season to three goals, equaling his total from the entire 2023-24 campaign.
