The Federal Government has prosecuted and convicted more than 325 terrorists, with sentences ranging from the death penalty to life imprisonment and up to 70 years in prison.
According to The PUNCH, this achievement was recorded during the Phase 5 and Phase 6 terrorism trials held at the Kainji Detention Facility in Niger State.
In the Phase 5 trials conducted in July 2024, 143 cases were heard, leading to 125 convictions. Similarly, the recently concluded Phase 6 trials, held from December 9 to 13, 2024, addressed 237 cases, securing 200 convictions.
The National Counter Terrorism Centre, under the Office of the National Security Adviser, highlighted the significance of these trials in a statement issued on Sunday.
According to the NCTC, the sentences handed down reflected the severity of the crimes committed.
“Those sentenced to the maximum penalties were found guilty of heinous offences, including attacks on women and children, destruction of religious sites, the slaughter of innocent civilians, and the abduction of women and children during a brutal assault on the Gina Kara Kai community in Borno State,” the statement read.
The government emphasized its commitment to dismantling all elements of terrorist networks, including financiers. “Individuals involved in terrorism financing—a critical enabler of violent activities—were sentenced to life imprisonment,” the NCTC added.
Five Federal High Court judges presided over the trials, which adhered strictly to international standards of justice. The government also assured stakeholders involved in the process of their security.
“Measures have been implemented to ensure the safety of judicial officers, witnesses, and other stakeholders involved in the trials,” the statement continued.
Highlighting the broader impact, the NCTC stated, “This initiative reflects Nigeria’s commitment to global best practices in prosecuting terrorism-related cases and aligns with international conventions aimed at protecting fundamental rights.”
The Federal Government reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring justice for victims of terrorism and restoring peace in affected regions.
“This milestone underscores our unwavering resolve to protect lives and property and bring perpetrators of violence to justice,” the statement concluded.
