The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency in Kogi State has said it arrested 284 suspects and confiscated over 5.2 million kilograms of illicit substances between January and December 2024.
It also seized counterfeit currency amounting to $2 million and ₦20.4 million in various denominations.
This update was shared by the NDLEA Commander in Kogi State, Mustapha Yahuza, during a press conference held in Lokoja, the state capital, on Monday.
Yahuza highlighted the destruction of 10 hectares of marijuana plantations as a key milestone, describing the agency’s achievements as substantial in the ongoing war against substance abuse and trafficking.
He credited the accomplishments to the dedication and resilience of the NDLEA team despite numerous operational challenges.
“The more than five tonnes of drugs seized include Cannabis Sativa, Tramadol, Diazepam, Methamphetamine, Rohypnol, and Exol-5. Other drugs seized include Cocaine, Codeine, Pethidine Injection, Ergometrine Injection, Nitrous Oxide, and Heroin,” Yahuza stated.
He further revealed that the agency secured the convictions of 91 individuals, with several other cases still pending trial at the Federal High Court in Lokoja.
Beyond enforcement, the NDLEA actively engaged in preventive measures. According to Yahuza, “In addition to enforcement, the NDLEA has been active in drug abuse prevention and education.”
He disclosed that 51 schools and organisations were sensitised on the dangers of drug abuse throughout the year.
Additionally, the agency counselled 195 individuals referred by investigation units as part of its advocacy and drug demand reduction initiatives.
The NDLEA Commander also issued a firm warning against drug consumption and trafficking, emphasizing their harmful impact on individuals, communities, and the nation.
He noted that all seized exhibits have been handed over to appropriate authorities for further investigation and legal action.
Yahuza commended the professionalism of his officers and personnel in tackling substance abuse and reiterated the agency’s commitment to safeguarding society.
