The Anambra State Police Command has dismantled a notorious criminal hideout in Nimo, Njikoka Local Government Area, during a joint security operation that led to the recovery of 19 improvised explosive devices.
The Command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed in a press release on Wednesday that the raid took place in the early hours of Tuesday, December 24, 2024.
“In the early hours of December 24, 2024, a collaborative operation involving the police, military, civil defence, and local vigilante groups successfully dislodged a criminal camp in Nimo, Njikoka Local Government Area,” Ikenga said.
He further disclosed that several makeshift structures within the camp were destroyed, and fleeing suspects sustained injuries while escaping.
“The team destroyed multiple makeshift shelters and recovered 19 unexploded IEDs. Some suspects fled with injuries from gunfire during the operation,” Ikenga stated.
The raid was reportedly the result of actionable intelligence gathered about the gang’s activities, coupled with information obtained from suspects arrested in earlier police operations across the state.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Itam, praised the joint effort of the security agencies and the vigilance of residents, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in safeguarding the community during the festive season.
“The synergy between security agencies and the public has been instrumental in this success. We encourage continued cooperation to ensure peace and safety during and after the Yuletide season,” CP Itam noted.
The Commissioner also urged hospitals to promptly report individuals seeking treatment for bullet wounds or other suspicious injuries.
“This measure is essential to tracking down fleeing suspects and preventing further criminal activities,” CP Itam explained.
Reassuring the public of their commitment, the Command highlighted plans for intensified patrols and targeted operations to maintain security.
“We remain dedicated to sustaining security dominance through proactive measures, ensuring a safe and peaceful holiday season for all residents,” the statement concluded.
