The Labour Party has described the Supreme Court’s judgment delivered on Friday as an affirmation of Julius Abure’s leadership.
Reacting to the ruling, Obiora Ifoh, the party’s national publicity secretary, maintained that Abure remains the National Chairman of the Labour Party.
The Supreme Court had earlier nullified the judgment that recognised Abure as the party’s national chairman. The court held that leadership matters within political parties are internal issues over which the judiciary has no jurisdiction.
Following the verdict, Ifoh expressed the party’s position on the matter via the Labour Party’s X page, stating, “Supreme Court strikes out Nenadi, Abure suits, says only Political Parties can determine who their leaders are.”
He further added, “It also said that the courts shouldn’t dabble into the affairs of the political parties. Abure is still the National Chairman of the Labour Party.”
The Supreme Court had upheld the appeal filed by Nenadi Usman, a former senator representing Kaduna South, alongside another person, ruling that the appeal had merit. In contrast, the apex court dismissed a cross-appeal filed by the Abure-led faction of the Labour Party, describing it as unmeritorious.
