The Federal Road Safety Corps has disclosed that 35 people have died and 270 others injured in 97 road crashes in Anambra State from January to November.
Sector Commander, FRSC, Anambra, Mr Adeoye Irelewuyi, disclosed this while presenting the data at a year-end media conference and award ceremony on Saturday in Awka.
Irelewuyi explained that the figures indicated great improvement and reduction when compared to the records from 2022, attributing it to the media’s dissemination of road safety information.
“Looking at our activities from January to Nov. 30, we recorded 97 road crashes which involved 820 persons, 25 of the crashes were fatal, claiming the lives of 35 persons and 270 persons injured.
“There is a significant reduction when compared with the 2022 record where we recorded 132 road crashes involving 1,048 persons, 42 of which were fatal, claiming the lives of 64 persons and injuring 306 others.”
The Sector Commander pointed out that the Corps would launch Operation Zero Tolerance to Road Traffic Crash from December 15 to January 15, 2024, to ensure smooth traffic flow during the Yuletide.
He said that 1,000 people, including regular and special marshals, will be deployed around the state to provide effective traffic management, enforcement, and control.
Irelewuyi stated further that the operation would be carried out in partnership with sister agencies, including the media, the Federal Ministry of Works, the Anambra State Ministry of Transportation, and the Traffic Management Agency.
