A 20-year-old man, Abubakar Abdu, has allegedly killed 30-year-old woman, Azumi Abubakar, after she caught him stealing maize from her home in Adamawa State.
In a statement on Monday, the Adamawa State Police Command confirmed the arrest of Abdu, a resident of Gengle village in Mayo Belwa Local Government Area, for the stabbing Azumi to death.
The police explained that Abdu was apprehended on November 10, 2024, following the attack.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, Suleiman Nguroje, in a statement, said the crime took place on November 7, 2024, at around 3:00 a.m.
Abdu allegedly broke into Azumi’s house and stole a quantity of maize. While fleeing the scene, Azumi spotted him.
“The suspect had on 7/11/2024, at about 0300hrs broke into the house of the victim and stole some quantity of maize,” the statement said. “As the suspect was in the course of escaping, the victim, sighting and identifying him, called him by his name.”
Upon realizing he had been caught, Abdu reportedly attacked Azumi in a desperate attempt to avoid being reported. He stabbed her with a knife which resulted to her death.
“Upon realizing that he was noticed, the suspect immediately attacked the victim by stabbing her with a knife, as a result of which she died,” the police said.
Azumi’s husband quickly alerted the authorities, leading to the suspect’s arrest. The police emphasized that the investigation would be concluded promptly.
“The suspect will be charged to court as soon as investigation is completed,” the statement added.
