The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has disassociated himself from a planned rally allegedly organised in his support by a group identified as the Progressive Peoples’ Resolution.
The rally reportedly scheduled for today, April 4th, is said to be spearheaded by one Ubong Idemudo, whom Akpabio described as a controversial figure.
In a statement released on Thursday and signed by his Special Assistant on Media, Jackson Udom, Akpabio called on the police and other security agencies in Akwa Ibom State to prevent the rally from taking place. He labelled the event as a “satanic rally” and emphasised that it did not have his approval.
The statement, titled “Disregard any rally in Akwa Ibom purported to be in support of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, GCON,” clarified the Senate President’s stance on the matter.
“The attention of the office of the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has been drawn to a planned rally purported to be in support of the Senate President and organised by an unknown association by name; Progressive Peoples’ Resolution and led by one Ubong Idemudo, a known controversial character, slated for tomorrow 4th April 2025,” the statement read.
Akpabio categorically denied any involvement or endorsement of the event, stating, “The President of the Senate is not aware of any rally organised in his support at any venue in Akwa Ibom and therefore urges his supporters and the peace-loving people of Akwa Ibom State to disregard such rally and go about their lawful duties.”
He also expressed concerns about the motives behind the rally, describing it as “the handiwork of fifth columnists trying to use the name of the Senate President to achieve their devilish goal.”
The statement concluded with a firm directive to law enforcement agencies: “The Police and other security agencies in the state are by this statement directed to ensure that such satanic rally is not allowed to hold, as such has no approval of the Senate President.”
The Senate President’s office urged the public to remain vigilant and not be swayed by groups seeking to exploit Akpabio’s name for ulterior motives.
