The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria has elected Bello Lawal, the Chairman of Kaita Local Government Area in Katsina State, as its new president.
According to The PUNCH, this follows the end of Aminu Mua’zu Maifata’s term, who served as Executive Chairman of Lafia Local Government Area in Nasarawa State.
The election took place during the National Executive Council meeting held in Lafia, Nasarawa’s state capital, on Tuesday.
Lawal, in his acceptance speech, expressed gratitude to the council members for their confidence in him, promising to build on the successes of his predecessor.
“I am deeply honoured by this responsibility,” Lawal said. “With the support of every member, I am confident we can advance the objectives of ALGON, particularly in the ongoing struggle for local government autonomy.”
He emphasized the importance of unity and urged members to collaborate with him in strengthening governance at the grassroots level.
“I appeal to all members to work with me to achieve the vision we all share for improving local government administration,” Lawal added.
Outgoing president Aminu Maifata, in his farewell speech, congratulated Lawal on his election and urged ALGON members to offer him full support.
He commended the NEC for conducting a peaceful election and expressed confidence in Lawal’s leadership abilities.
“I have no doubt that Bello Lawal will take ALGON to greater heights,” Maifata said, encouraging members to extend to Lawal the same cooperation given to him during his tenure.
