The Anambra State Police Command has thwarted a planned robbery on the Ebenebe-Achalla Road in the Awka North Local Government Area.
According to a press statement by the command’s spokesman, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, the operation was conducted on Monday.
He stated that operatives from the Rapid Response Squad in Awkuzu, engaged in an anti-kidnapping patrol, successfully intervened in response to a tip-off from a vigilant resident who observed two armed individuals on a motorcycle.
The police spokesman reported, “The operatives went in pursuit of the gang and encountered them where they had positioned to rob motorists.”
He explained that when the suspects attempted to engage the operatives in a shootout, the well-prepared police team swiftly overpowered them, prompting the suspects to abandon their weapons and flee into the nearby bush.
According to him, search of the area resulted in the recovery of two AK-47 rifles loaded with several rounds of 7.62mm ammunition and expended round casings.
The Commissioner of Police for Anambra State, CP Aderemi Adeoye, commended the team for their bravery and urged them to intensify proactive operations in the region to completely eliminate criminal elements that have been troubling the citizens.
