Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has announced that the state will begin paying a minimum wage of N70,000 starting next month.
The governor made the disclosure during a meeting with principals and headteachers from public primary and secondary schools, held at the Prof. Dora Akunyili Women’s Development Centre in Awka.
In addition to the new wage policy, Soludo revealed that free education would be extended to senior secondary school students in all public schools across the state.
The policy is set to take effect next week.
“From next week, a free education policy will be introduced for senior students in all public schools in Anambra,” Soludo announced.
“This is part of our commitment to human capital development, despite the existing financial constraints.”
He further directed that any senior secondary students who had already paid the N5,000 term fees should be refunded.
Anambra has been providing free education to students from Basic to Junior Secondary School since 2023.
With the new policy, all students from primary school up to senior secondary school will now benefit from free education in public institutions.
The governor also emphasized his administration’s dedication to delivering on its promises, stating, “We will continue to work hard to meet the expectations of the people, even with limited resources.”
