Arsenal have reportedly reached an agreement with Bologna for the transfer of Riccardo Calafiori.
The 22-year-old had a stellar season with Bologna, aiding their qualification for the Champions League.
However, it was his standout performances with Italy at Euro 2024 that propelled him into the spotlight.
Calafiori’s value has surged due to his impressive displays, ensuring Bologna a substantial profit despite Basel holding a 50% sell-on clause from their £3.4m investment a year ago.
Negotiations with Arsenal, who emerged as the leading contenders for Calafiori, over a €50m, £42m, deal have been ongoing for a few weeks.
Both sides aimed to find a suitable payment structure. Bologna held out for €45m plus €5m in add-ons, with a significant upfront payment, while Arsenal preferred to include more clauses and future incentives.
The Athletic initially reported Arsenal’s efforts to accelerate the signing of Calafiori, aiming to finalize the deal quickly amid interest from other top clubs.
Fabrizio Romano has now confirmed an agreement, with Arsenal set to pay a guaranteed €40m (£33.7m) fee, €5m in add-ons, and a sell-on clause.
Tune in to The Chronicles of a Gooner – the Arsenal podcast – as Harry Symeou discusses the potential arrival of Riccardo Calafiori at the Emirates Stadium.
Calafiori, who was requested to attend pre-season training by Bologna as negotiations continued, has agreed to personal terms on a five-year contract.
He fits Arsenal’s criteria perfectly, with his versatility to play as a centre-back or left-back aligning with Mikel Arteta’s preference for inverted full-backs, a common feature in top teams.
At Euro 2024, Calafiori demonstrated a willingness to step into midfield and advance the ball, creating opportunities for Italy’s forwards. His proactive approach was praised by pundits.
If Arsenal finalizes the deal, they may offload one of their current full-backs, with Jakub Kiwior being the most mentioned candidate for an exit from Emirates Stadium.
