Arsenal’s young defender Riccardo Calafiori was forced off due to a leg injury during Italy’s 3-1 triumph over France in their UEFA Nations League opener on Friday night.
The 22-year-old, who made the switch from Bologna to Arsenal over the summer, has yet to make his full debut for the Gunners but remains a key player in Italy’s national team under coach Luciano Spalletti.
Calafiori started in Italy’s lineup for the high-profile clash at the Parc des Princes. However, his night was cut short in the 71st minute following a peculiar incident.
Although initially involved in a clean tackle by fellow Italian defender Alessandro Bastoni, a subsequent collision with France’s winger Ousmane Dembele resulted in an unexpected injury.
As Dembele stumbled, his studs caught the back of Calafiori’s leg, prompting immediate medical attention before Calafiori had to be substituted.
The injury raised alarm among Arsenal supporters, particularly with the north London derby against fierce rivals Tottenham Hotspur looming next weekend.
Despite the concerns, Italy’s head coach Luciano Spalletti struck a reassuring tone in his post-match press conference.
Spalletti suggested that Calafiori’s injury might not be as serious as feared, and the young defender could even return in time for Italy’s upcoming fixture against Israel.
“We need to assess Riccardo but with our staff, we’ve a good chance to have him back with us for the next game,” Spalletti told reporters, offering hope for a quick recovery.
On the pitch, Italy showcased resilience after a shaky start. France seized the lead within the first minute, courtesy of Bradley Barcola, who capitalized on a defensive lapse.
However, Italy rallied back, with Federico Dimarco leveling the score in the 30th minute, courtesy of an assist from Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, who returned to international duty after serving a ban related to betting offenses.
The second half saw Italy take control of the game. Midfielder Davide Frattesi, who has been in fine form, netted a crucial goal to put the visitors ahead.
The victory was sealed when Giacomo Raspadori calmly slotted in a well-crafted goal, ensuring Italy’s strong start to the competition and a hard-fought win on French soil.
