Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, has urged the National Assembly to ensure fairness, inclusivity, and transparency in the ongoing review of the Tax Reform Bills.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Atiku highlighted concerns about uneven development among Nigeria’s federating units, emphasizing the need for a fiscal system that promotes equity and justice.
“I have closely observed the public discourse surrounding the Tax Reform Bills. Nigerians have voiced a clear demand for a fiscal system that upholds justice, fairness, and equity,” Atiku stated.
“It is essential that the reforms do not worsen the uneven development of states by disproportionately benefiting some while disadvantaged others.”
The former vice president called on lawmakers to conduct the public hearing process with inclusiveness, ensuring that a wide range of voices—such as civil society groups, traditional leaders, and economic experts—are heard.
“Transparency and objectivity are critical for building trust in governance and fostering accountability,” Atiku remarked.
“The National Assembly must guarantee that the public hearing process is open to diverse stakeholders, allowing meaningful contributions from all segments of society.”
Atiku also advocated for a review and publication of the National Economic Council resolutions, describing the council as a vital platform for shaping Nigeria’s economic policies.
“The National Assembly has a duty to ensure that the final provisions of these bills reflect the aspirations and needs of the majority of Nigerians,” he added.
