Australian police announced on Wednesday their ongoing investigation into mysterious packages that are believed to contain more than 120 kilograms (260 pounds) of cocaine, discovered washed up on beaches during the Christmas period.
The initial findings revealed a batch of 39 barnacle-covered bricks, each weighing approximately one kilogram, suspected to be cocaine, near Magenta Beach, located north of Sydney, as confirmed by the police on Friday.
Since the initial discovery, an additional 85 packages, matching the same size and description, have been sighted along approximately 80 kilometers (50 miles) of the New South Wales coastline, according to state police.
Detective Chief Superintendent Jason Weinstein urged the public to report any suspicious packages, emphasizing the significance of cooperation and vigilance in this ongoing investigation, as stated in a released statement.
“Detectives and specialist police are currently combing beaches and coastlines for any outstanding packages and working behind the scenes to make sure we find and hold accountable those responsible,” said Weinstein, who is director of the state’s crime command.
