The management of Babcock University has confirmed that the school’s portal has been compromised by ‘unscrupulous’ hackers.
The hackers released a statement, recounting how they had alerted the school in the past about some loopholes in their website.
In fact, in March, some hackers uploaded porn videos on the portal and the school management had to apologize for the offensive content.
The unknown individuals claimed to be in possession of the personal details of students, parents and guardians, alumni, bank details, card details, and addresses.
They further said that the website was not protected when the school’s security engineers worked on the last alert issued and the passwords were not changed.
The hackers threatened to leak all information in their possession unless their demands are met.
The school in a statement issued recently and titled: “NOTIFICATION ON BREACHED BABCOCK UNIVERSITY MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM”, confirmed that the institution has come under serious cyber attacks lately and the management has issued a memo to inform students and the public at large.
It also debunked claims that the hackers were in possession of some personal information adding they are inaccessible to the school information.
The statement read, “The public is hereby notified that the Babcock University Management Information System has been violated by suspected unscrupulous persons with intent to embarrass, deceive, and defraud unsuspecting university clients and other stakeholders.
“The criminals had gained unauthorized, illegitimate and illicit access to some of the University’s clients’ inconsequential records from the front end server of the University, and threatened dire consequences if the University did not reach out to them. They also claimed that the University’s sensitive information had been compromised.
“We wish to state that the perpetrators’ access to the said record is of no significance as it has no meaningful impact on any aspect of the University’s operations and management.
“We confidently and wholeheartedly reassure our esteemed parents, students and our other clients and stakeholders that none of the University’s sensitive information has been broken into or is in unapproved or improper places.
“Please note that, as a result of this mindless and vicious interference with our university management information system and in our continued efforts to safeguard all and every official and classified information, the said management information system is currently unavailable as our ICT team of experts is working to further reinforce its security to avoid a reoccurrence. We are, as well, working with the relevant security agencies to identify the source of the attack
“Whereas cyber-attacks have generally assumed a growing phenomenon of concern globally, we in Babcock University remain vigilant.
“With pleasure, we are glad to inform you that despite the insistent and vigorous attacks on our information platforms, the inbuilt layers of consolidated security features on them have made our information platforms impenetrable to the perpetrators of these senseless and ill-motivated cyber-attacks.
“We assure the publics that all sensitive University information remain unassailable and will always be inaccessible to fraudsters and every other intruder to the University’s information sites.
