Barcelona head coach, Hansi Flick, has ruled out winger Raphinha and defender Ronald Araujo from his squad for Thursday’s rescheduled La Liga clash against Osasuna.
Both players recently featured in South American World Cup qualifiers, and Flick emphasized the importance of allowing them to recover after their long journey back to Spain.
“They will not play, they are not in the team, they have a long flight and it’s not the best way, because they have to recover,” Flick stated during Wednesday’s press conference.
Raphinha was in the starting lineup as Brazil suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat to Argentina, while Araujo remained on the bench during Uruguay’s goalless draw with Bolivia.
Barcelona had attempted to appeal against the decision to play this fixture during the international break, as it was initially postponed on March 8 due to the passing of one of the club’s medical staff. However, their appeal was unsuccessful.
Flick also voiced his frustration over the team’s demanding schedule, particularly the upcoming league game against Leganes on April 12, just days before their crucial Champions League quarter-final second leg against Borussia Dortmund on April 15.
“When playing away, always at nine (2000 GMT), we arrive late back in the night, it’s to do with recovery for the players,” he said.
“I am not happy with this. When you see other leagues with Champions League teams, it’s different to here.”
Despite the scheduling challenges, Flick remains confident in his squad’s ability to secure three points against Osasuna and strengthen their position at the top of La Liga.
“Always no excuses, we go for it,” he asserted.
“Tomorrow we will go for it, I think we have big, big quality in this team.
“We can win against everyone, even if some players are not in the team… we’re looking forward and are very positive.”
Meanwhile, Flick confirmed that defender Inigo Martinez will start, despite withdrawing from the Spanish national team squad.
Youngster Pau Cubarsi, who picked up a knock while representing Spain, will be fit enough for the bench.
