Benin Republic have secured a spot at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations set to be hosted by Morocco, following a hard-fought goalless draw against Libya in Tripoli.
The Cheetahs, under the guidance of former Super Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr, displayed resilience against a charged atmosphere at the June 11 Stadium, where 45,000 passionate Libyan fans cheered on the hosts.
Despite the intimidating crowd, Benin held firm to earn the vital point they needed.
Benin concluded their qualification campaign with eight points, finishing second in Group A behind Nigeria, who topped the group with 11 points.
However, the group standings came down to the wire after Nigeria’s surprising home defeat to Rwanda, a result that briefly put Benin’s qualification hopes in jeopardy.
Rwanda also finished on eight points but missed out due to an inferior goal difference and head-to-head record against Benin.
The West Africans had earlier edged the Amavubi in critical encounters during the qualifiers, ensuring their place at the continental showpiece.
This qualification marks a significant milestone for Gernot Rohr and his team, who overcame various challenges to make it to Morocco.
For the Cheetahs, this achievement is another step forward in their quest to make a strong impression at Africa’s biggest football tournament.
