Passengers aboard a Bus Rapid Transit system in Orile, Lagos, were ambushed and robbed by street thugs masquerading as protesters.
Dare Abiola, a victim and eyewitness, recounted the ordeal, stating that the attackers, who claimed to be protesting the seizure of motorcycles by a government task force, targeted their bus around 1 p.m.
According to the Nation, he said the thugs seized passengers’ belongings during an attack that lasted for 20 to 30 minutes without any intervention from security forces.
“I boarded a BRT bus from Mile 2 heading to CMS. As we approached Odunade bus stop, we noticed a large crowd gathering, with some marching towards Orile bus stop,” Abiola said. “We heard that they were heading to Orile police station to confront policemen who had reportedly raided motorcyclists in the area.”
As the bus reached the Alafia bus stop, near the NNPC fuel station, the situation escalated.
“The crowd grew larger, and suddenly, some of them started breaking the BRT windshield and windows,” Abiola described. “They took my bag and phone, and when I hesitated, they threatened to stab me with a broken bottle.”
Following the incident, Abiola went to Orile police station to file a formal complaint.
Meanwhile, Lagos State police spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, stated that he had yet to receive detailed information on the incident.
