Manchester United captain, Bruno Fernandes, has committed his future to Old Trafford by signing a new contract that will keep him at the club until June 2027, with an option to extend for an additional year.
Since joining the Red Devils in January 2020 from Sporting Lisbon in a £47 million transfer, Fernandes has become an instrumental figure in the squad, scoring 79 goals and providing 67 assists in 234 appearances.
His previous contract, which he inked in 2022, was due to run out in 2026.
Expressing his deep connection with the club, Fernandes said, “Everybody knows the passion I have for Manchester United. I can see how positive the future is going to be and I am relishing leading this team forward. I understand the responsibility and significance of wearing this shirt, and the levels of dedication and desire required to represent this incredible club.”
The 29-year-old Portuguese playmaker took over as United’s captain in July 2023, replacing Harry Maguire.
Despite facing criticism from former United legends like Gary Neville and Roy Keane, manager Erik ten Hag has consistently backed Fernandes, recognizing his value to the team.
Reflecting on his decision to renew his contract, Fernandes stated, “I wouldn’t have signed this contract if I did not think my best moments in a United shirt are still to come. I have had so many special moments here already. Hearing my name sung from the Stretford End, scoring a hat-trick against Leeds, leading the team out at Old Trafford on European nights, and lifting trophies at Wembley.”
During the summer transfer window, Fernandes was not listed among the players United deemed ‘untouchable,’ meaning the club was not opposed to entertaining offers.
However, any potential sale would have required a bid that the club found irresistible, which did not occur.
Prior to the FA Cup final in May, Fernandes had hinted at some uncertainty about his future, emphasizing that he wanted his own ambitions to align with those of the club.
Manchester United’s Sporting Director, Dan Ashworth, praised Fernandes’ influence both on and off the pitch, calling him a “brilliant leader” who drives excellence among players and staff alike.
Ashworth added, “Bruno has performed at such a high level with remarkable consistency since he arrived at Manchester United. Bruno’s dedication to the club epitomises what it takes to be a United player. He remains pivotal to everything that we want to achieve here, and we look forward to working together to deliver the success that this club demands.”
With this new contract, Fernandes is poised to continue being a central figure in Manchester United’s quest for silverware in the coming years.
