The Economic Community of West African States has announced preparations to present Major General Muhammadu Buhari (ret.d) with an award for excellence in advancing democracy.
The president of Guinea-Bissau and the chairman of ECOWAS, Umaro Sissoco Embalo, revealed this information during a private meeting with the president that took place concurrently with the fifth United Nations Conference on Least Developed Countries in Doha, Qatar.
The honor will be given to President Buhari in recognition of his contributions to the defense and advancement of democracy in West Africa, according to a statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu.
President Embalo stated that the Nigerian president had made more efforts than any other leader to help democratic governments in West Africa and had also performed remarkably well in his campaigns against newly-emerging non-democratic regimes.
When the new ECOWAS headquarters building in Abuja is finished, the ECOWAS Chairman announced that President Buhari will have his name on the Roll of Honour so that future generations of West African citizens will be aware of the greatness he attained and be inspired to emulate his admirable examples
The proposal was welcomed by President Buhari, who emphasized that democracy is the most effective method of uniting disparate groups of people and a reliable tool for achieving national progress.
