Moises Caicedo’s emphatic second-half volley denied Manchester United three points as Chelsea fought back to earn a 1-1 draw in a hard-fought Premier League clash at Old Trafford on Sunday.
This was United’s first league match since the dismissal of former manager Erik ten Hag, who parted ways with the club just days before.
The hosts, led by interim coach and club legend Ruud van Nistelrooy, looked poised to claim victory when captain Bruno Fernandes converted a penalty in the 70th minute.
The spot-kick was awarded after Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez collided with Rasmus Hojlund, catching the forward’s foot as he lunged to collect the ball.
Fernandes coolly sent Sanchez the wrong way, sparking joyous scenes in the stands and prompting Van Nistelrooy to leap up in celebration.
Yet, Chelsea soon answered back. When United struggled to clear a Chelsea corner, the ball fell to Caicedo, who unleashed a powerful volley towards goal.
United keeper Andre Onana managed to get a hand on the effort, but it wasn’t enough, as the ball still found its way into the bottom corner, leveling the score and dampening the celebrations at Old Trafford.
This result sees Chelsea holding steady in fourth place on 18 points after 10 games, while Manchester United remain in 13th with 12 points, struggling to find form.
Ruben Amorim, recently confirmed as Ten Hag’s successor, will officially take charge on November 11.
