A two-storey residential building located at 20 Amusu Street, Bale Bus Stop, in the Sari area of Orile Iganmu, Lagos State, collapsed on Monday, October 14, 2024, due to structural distress, according to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency.
In a statement issued by LASEMA’s Head of Public Affairs, Nosa Okunbor, it was revealed that the Lagos State Building Control Agency had previously marked the building as distressed and issued eviction notices to its occupants. Despite these warnings, some residents refused to vacate the premises.
“Upon the arrival of the Agency’s Response Team at the incident scene at 09:33hrs, it was observed that a two-storey residential building had collapsed,” Okunbor said. “The cause of the collapse was attributed to distress.”
The statement also noted that all residents had managed to escape safely before the building came down. “Fortunately, there was no loss of life or injuries, as all occupants evacuated before the collapse when signs of imminent danger became apparent,” Okunbor added.
Following the collapse, emergency responders cordoned off the site and evacuated the remaining residents from the area for their safety.
A video circulating online showed the building collapsing in the early hours of the day as nearby residents fled. No injuries or fatalities have been reported.
Authorities have taken steps to secure the site, ensuring that no further risks arise from the debris.
