The Nigerian Customs Service, Area 2 Command, Onne, Rivers State, has intercepted 12 containers of illegal medicines valued at over N20.3 billion in duty-paid value.
This is part of the Command’s intensified anti-smuggling operations, which also saw it surpass its 2024 revenue target of N618 billion by generating N634 billion.
Speaking during a media briefing on Tuesday in Onne, Eleme Local Government Area, the Customs Area Controller for the Command, Comptroller Mohammed Babandede, described the seizures as a significant achievement in protecting public health and securing Nigeria’s borders.
“Our vigilant officers intercepted 12 containers of illicit medicines, including 1,721,100 bottles of Cough Syrup with Codeine, 510,000 tablets of Really Extra Diclofenac, and 7,100,000 tablets of Tramadol,” Babandede said.
“These efforts underscore our unwavering commitment to safeguarding public health and ensuring compliance with import regulations.”
The seized items also included sanitary ware fittings and other goods used to conceal the illicit cargo.
The Command recorded a revenue increase of N321 billion compared to 2023, marking a 98% rise. Babandede attributed the success to enhanced stakeholder collaboration, intelligence sharing, and strategic engagement.
“This year, we generated N634 billion, achieving 103% of our annual target,” he said. “This feat is a testament to the dedication of our officers and the support of our stakeholders.”
In 2024, the Command made 76 container seizures with a duty-paid value of over N150 billion, including arms, ammunition, and other uncustomed goods.
On exports, the Command processed over 2.7 million metric tonnes of goods, including agro and mineral resources such as sesame seeds, aluminium ingots, and wheat bran. These goods had a Free on Board value of $953 million (approximately N1.26 trillion).
Highlighting the morale boost among officers, Babandede noted that the Command was recognized as the best in anti-smuggling operations by the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi
“This recognition has strengthened our resolve,” he stated. “The recent promotions, including 14 Deputy Comptrollers elevated to Comptroller, reflect the hard work and dedication of our officers.”
Eight officers also received special promotions for their role in intercepting firearms and ammunition earlier this year.
As part of its end-of-year activities, the Command distributed starter packs, including sewing and grinding machines, as well as food items, to widows, orphanages, and members of its host community.
Babandede expressed optimism for 2025, pledging to sustain the momentum in trade facilitation, transparency, and anti-smuggling operations.
“We remain committed to protecting the lives and well-being of Nigerians while upholding the integrity of our borders,” he concluded.
