Kevin De Bruyne has confirmed that he will leave Manchester City when his contract ends this season, bringing an end to a remarkable decade at the club.
The 33-year-old Belgian playmaker has been a pivotal figure since joining from Wolfsburg in 2015, collecting 16 major trophies — including six Premier League titles and the historic Champions League win in 2023.
Despite battling injuries and making just 19 starts this season, De Bruyne’s impact remains undisputed.
Across 413 appearances, he netted 106 goals, cementing his legacy as one of the club’s all-time greats.
Manchester City hailed him as a “global icon of the game” in their announcement, and confirmed they are preparing a “fitting tribute” before his departure.
“Every story comes to an end, but this has definitely been the best chapter,” De Bruyne wrote in a heartfelt message on social media.
“Football led me to all of you – and to this city. Chasing my dream, not knowing this period would change my life. This city. This club.
“These people gave me everything. I had no choice but to give everything back. And guess what – we won everything.
“Whether we like it or not, it’s time to say goodbye. Suri, Rome, Mason, Michele, and I are beyond grateful for what this place has meant for our family. Manchester will forever be on our kids’ passports – and more importantly, in each of our hearts.
“This will always be our home. We cannot thank the city, club, staff, team-mates, friends, and family enough for this 10-year ride.”
City emphasized De Bruyne’s importance in their statement, celebrating his contributions across a glittering era.
He became the first midfielder since Colin Bell to surpass 100 goals for the club and helped usher in an era of dominance under manager Pep Guardiola, who arrived a year after De Bruyne’s signing.
Signed for £55 million from Wolfsburg, the former Chelsea man grew into one of the Premier League’s finest creators, leading in assists (117), chances created (827), and big chances created (193) since 2015. His total assists rank second only to Ryan Giggs (162) in Premier League history.
De Bruyne shares the record for most assists in a single Premier League season (20, in 2019-20) with Thierry Henry and holds the most Premier League Playmaker awards (2017-18, 2019-20, 2022-23).
Surprisingly, he has never claimed a Player of the Month award but has twice been named Premier League Player of the Season, in 2019-20 and 2021-22, placing him alongside legends such as Henry, Ronaldo, and Vidic.
Injuries have taken a toll in recent seasons, limiting his appearances and stalling contract negotiations.
While he was linked to a move to Saudi Arabia last summer, De Bruyne remained open-minded, stating he was “open to everything” as he recovered from a long-term thigh issue.
As he prepares to move on, Manchester City and fans worldwide will reflect on a decade of brilliance from one of football’s most gifted midfielders.
