The President-General of Okuama community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State, Pa James Oghoroko, has reportedly passed away following alleged torture and inhumane treatment while in military detention.
Oghoroko was among six community leaders, including Prof. Arthur Ekpekpo, Chief Belvis Adogbo, Dennis Okugbaye, Pa Anthony Ahwemuria, and Mrs. Rita Akata, arrested by the Nigerian military between August 18 and 20, 2024.
Since their arrest, they remained in custody without formal charges.
News of Oghoroko’s death was announced during an emergency meeting held by community leaders. It was also revealed that Dennis Okugbaye, another detained leader, is critically ill at an undisclosed military facility.
In response to their detention, the community, through their legal representatives, filed a lawsuit (FHC/WR/CS/84/2024) in August, seeking ₦100 million in damages for illegal detention.
Earlier legal actions (Suit Nos. FHC/WR/CS/41/2024, FHC/WR/CS/42/2024, and FHC/WR/CS/43/2024) were also filed following the military’s demolition of the community after the deaths of 17 soldiers.
The Federal High Court in Warri, which had scheduled a hearing for the leaders’ bail application on December 9, 2024, last adjourned on November 20.
However, before the court could sit again, Oghoroko died on December 4 in military custody.
Reacting to the news, lead counsel Olorogun Albert Akpomudje (SAN) described the situation as “disturbing” and stated that he would consult with the family and his legal team to determine the next course of action.
Oghoroko’s death has plunged the Okuama community into mourning, with residents expressing sadness and frustration. Groups of youths were seen gathering in somber discussions, visibly affected by the loss.
