A DNA test has traced the ancestry of Brazilian and Real Madrid football star, Vinicius Jr., to the Tikar people of Cameroon.
This revelation was unveiled on Tuesday during the pre-match warm-up of Brazil’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Uruguay, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
In a special ceremony, a certificate officially recognizing Vinicius Jr.’s Cameroonian heritage was presented.
A compelling video narrating the history and culture of the Tikar tribe, one of Cameroon’s most emblematic communities, was also showcased.
Vinicius’ father and the President of the Brazilian Football Confederation, Ednaldo Rodrigues, were in attendance to witness the historic moment.
This discovery was made possible through a partnership with AfricanAncestry.com, an organization dedicated to reconnecting individuals of African descent with their roots.
The initiative is part of the CBF’s innovative Golden Roots project, which seeks to uncover and celebrate the African origins of Seleção players, filling the void left by centuries of historical erasure due to the transatlantic slave trade.
Speaking on the emotional discovery, Vinicius Jr. remarked, “Discovering that my roots are in Cameroon is a very special moment for me and my family. It reminds me that, despite the challenges, our origins and our history count for a lot.”
The Golden Roots initiative, spearheaded by the CBF, has been hailed as a significant step in addressing the cultural disconnection caused by slavery.
The founder of AfricanAncestry.com, Gina Paige, emphasized its importance, stating, “Vini Jr. traces his roots back to the Tikar tribe in Cameroon. This discovery is a powerful act of resistance in the face of racism and the legacy of slavery.”
CBF President Ednaldo Rodrigues highlighted the broader significance of the program, saying, “By celebrating Vini Jr., we are celebrating all Brazilians. This reflects our commitment to an inclusive society and highlights the crucial contribution of Afro-Brazilian culture to our identity.”
This initiative not only sheds light on the African lineage of Brazilian football stars but also stands as a powerful symbol of unity, resilience, and the rich cultural heritage that defines Brazil’s diverse identity.
