Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has thrown his weight behind President Bola Tinubu’s tax reform bills, which have stirred debates, particularly in the Northern region of Nigeria.
Dogara voiced his support during a Town Hall meeting convened by the Christian Awareness Initiatives of Nigeria on Thursday in Kaduna.
He emphasized that matters of national interest should not be overshadowed by regional or sectarian sentiments, as has been the case with discussions around the tax reform bills.
Highlighting the benefits of the reforms, Dogara explained that they would particularly ease the tax burden for many Northerners.
“Those who are earning less than N800,000 would not be taxed, imagine how many Northerners will be out of the tax,” he stated.
He further noted the positive implications for small businesses, saying, “If businesses that do not make up to 50 million in a month will also not pay tax, imagine how it will free the economic space for our people. More businesses will be created and more people will be employed, in the region that has a high number of unemployed people roaming the streets.”
