Borussia Dortmund battled from behind to secure a 2-1 victory over Lille, sealing their place in the Champions League quarter-finals.
The French side took an early lead just five minutes in when Jonathan David fired a first-time shot through the legs of Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel.
The goal put Lille ahead 2-1 on aggregate following their 1-1 draw in Germany.
Despite creating several chances, Dortmund had to wait until the second half to respond.
In the 54th minute, Emre Can calmly converted a penalty after Thomas Meunier’s challenge on Serhou Guirassy inside the box.
Dortmund continued pressing, with Maximilian Beier heading narrowly wide before making up for it in the 65th minute.
The forward latched onto a Guirassy pass and powered a shot into the top of the net to put the visitors ahead.
Lille had opportunities to force extra time, with David nearly grabbing a second, but Kobel reacted brilliantly to deny him from close range.
Hakon Haraldsson also saw his dipping effort tipped over the crossbar by the Dortmund shot-stopper.
With the win, Niko Kovac’s team now sets up a thrilling quarter-final showdown against La Liga powerhouse Barcelona next month.
Guirassy Continues to Impress as Dortmund Advance
Serhou Guirassy maintained his outstanding form for Dortmund, registering his fourth Champions League assist in the tie.
The Guinea international has now been directly involved in 14 goals in the competition (10 goals, four assists), matching Mohamed Salah’s record for the most goal contributions by an African player in a single Champions League campaign (2017-18).
Although he didn’t find the net, Guirassy played a key role in Dortmund’s comeback, winning the penalty that got them back on level terms.
This victory marks the first time since February 2021, against Sevilla, that Dortmund have won a Champions League match after conceding first. However, with Barcelona up next, the German side will need Guirassy to continue his impressive run if they hope to progress further.
