Dozens of bodies have been recovered in flooded villages in Congo.
According to the provincial government through a press statement on Thursday, the flood was caused as a result of torrential rain that fell in Congo’s South Kivu province.
It was reported that the incident led to significant damage and loss of life in the villages of Bushushu and Nyamukubi.
Local authorities have not released an official death toll, but on Friday, humanitarian workers recovered at least 72 bodies from the debris according to Reuters.
Most of the victims were women and children. The recovery efforts were led by dedicated humanitarian workers who braved the dangerous conditions to assist those in need.
The local administrator, Thomas Bakenga, reported that at least 17 people were confirmed dead on Thursday night, and around 40 people were missing.
Also, the devastating floods have disrupted the lives of many in the affected areas, leaving them without shelter, food, or basic necessities.
The tragic event is yet another reminder of the devastating impact of natural disasters on vulnerable communities. In a statement, the provincial government expressed its condolences to the families affected by the disaster and pledged support to those impacted.
The recovery efforts in the affected areas are ongoing, with humanitarian organizations mobilizing to provide aid and assistance to those in need.
